View 3 events ↓Divali is the festival of lights and the biggest celebration for Hindus in Suriname. It is a national holiday. In the days leading up to it, the country is adorned in orange and gold: diyas light up the streets, homes and mandirs are decorated, and there are events, markets, and cultural evenings everywhere. On this page, you can read about the meaning of Divali and how it is celebrated in Suriname, as well as find all the Divali events we know about.
What is Divali?
Divali (also Diwali or Deepavali, meaning 'row of lights') celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana, and the people illuminated the city with oil lamps to welcome him.
Divali is also the festival of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth. On the evening of Divali, she is honored in many homes with a puja: prayers are offered for happiness, health, and prosperity in the new year.
When is Divali?
Divali falls on the new moon night (amavasya) in the Hindu month of Kartik, usually at the end of October or in the first half of November. Since the Hindu calendar follows the moon, the date shifts each year. The date for this year is at the top of this page.
How Divali is celebrated in Suriname
- Lighting diyas: small clay lamps filled with ghee or oil and a cotton wick. At sunset, they are lit at homes, on yards, and at mandirs.
- The National Divali Manifestation: a few days before Divali, the large Suriname diya is lit at Independence Square in Paramaribo, traditionally by Ram and Sita. There are performances, music, dance, and stalls.
- Puja and mandir: families visit the mandir or hold a Lakshmi puja at home.
- Sharing sweets: a lot of cooking takes place, and mithai (sweets) is shared with family, neighbors, and colleagues, regardless of their background.
- Parades, markets, and fireworks: during the Divali period, there are parade processions, Divali markets, and cultural programs in Paramaribo and the districts.
Tips for experiencing Divali
- Attend the National Divali Manifestation at Independence Square: people from all backgrounds celebrate together there.
- Drive slowly through neighborhoods like Wanica, Nickerie, or Saramacca on Divali night. The illuminated yards are at their most beautiful just after sunset.
- Visiting a mandir? Remove your shoes at the entrance and dress modestly.
- You can buy diyas in the weeks leading up to Divali at cultural shops and Divali markets.
